Sisters of Sankofa Aims to Give Women of Color Their Seat at the Table with Brunch Event.
November 27, 2017. On September 30, 2016, Solange Knowles released a critically acclaimed album that began shifting the conversation for women of color and Black women, in particular. Knowles’s effort, A Seat at the Table, was a glimpse at the rich fabric that made up her experience as a Black woman. As such, it spoke to the hearts of Black women around the globe. With poignant singles like Cranes in the Sky and Don’t Touch My Hair, Knowles sought to express the struggles of women coming into their own. The album sparked a thread in Khadija Frazier, the driving force behind Sisters of Sankofa, and inspired a divine idea. Khadija decided “to unite a network of women who are ready to spark change in their lives, communities, and around the world”. Khadija came up with an event that would to offer these women the opportunity to discuss the issues that keep them woke and working.
Khadija’s vision will unfold on February 24th, 2018 at Soulfully Good Restaurant in Miramar as women in South Florida take their seats at the table to take part in discussions driven by the interludes to Solange’s acclaimed album. The moderated discussion, adequately named A Seat at the Table: Beats, Brunch, Backtalk, will tackle overcoming depression and mental illness to find inner peace, self-love, racial profiling, and revitalizing communities of color among others. Attendees will be encouraged to take part in the conversation to help find solutions to common problems and offer action items that can be taken beyond the event to affect change.
If you would like more information on how to reserve your seat at the table, please contact Sisters of Sankofa at (305) 985-2593.
